"3 Different Muscle Fibers" by Mary Tan

Is your body better at #running for #miles on end #continuously or are you better at short #powerful bursts of #movement? How easily your body responds to certain exercises all depend on the type of muscle fiber you have. There are #three different types of #muscle fibers, all of which will be discussed here.

Type I muscle #fibers are known as SLOW-TWITCH fibers and, when observed under a microscope, are colored dark red due to the high amounts of #mitochondria and #capillaries in each fiber.  Having such high amounts of mitochondria enable these Type I fibers to contract slowly but repeatedly for hours without #fatigue, so aerobic activity is the main activity that these fibers are used for (mitochondria thrive on oxygen).  A majority of #endurance #athletes such as distance runners and #marathoners have high amounts of Type I muscle #fibers.

Type II muscle fibers are further broken down into IIA and IIB. Type II fibers are FAST-TWITCH fibers and are colored light pink to white due to lower amounts of mitochondrial and capillary density.  As a result, Type II fibers are not used for a long duration, aerobic activity but rather for short, intense bursts of power. Because the contraction times are very fast and powerful, these fibers are quick to fatigue.

Both IIA and IIB are used for activities such as weight lifting and sprinting but the difference is that IIA is known as FAST-TWITCH #OXIDATIVE, which can be used for events such as running a mile or any event that is fewer than 30 minutes, but obviously they cannot last as long as Type I fibers. On the other hand, Type IIB fibers are FAST-TWITCH #GLYCOLITIC, which are only meant for very rapid #contractions like sprinting or #powerlifting. As a result, IIB fibers can only last for at most 5 minutes or as little as several seconds before fatiguing.

Unfortunately, you cannot #change what type you have as muscle fiber types are determined mainly by #genetics.  However, just because you are born with more Type I fibers than II or vice versa, does not mean you cannot #train your muscles to adapt to a certain activity (Do not expect a full 3 crossover to Type I or II, as only ~10% of muscle fibers do actually convert from I to IIA or IIB to IIA). Train with whatever makes you #happy but also take pride in what your genetics has to offer-each fiber type has its many #advantages in the #fitness world! Go do some running/lifting.
